World Steel Production in 2024

According to the latest statistics from the World Steel Association (WSA), in 2024, global crude steel production will reach 1.8826 billion tons, a year-on-year decrease of 0.8%.
On January 24, the World Steel Association released global crude steel production data for December 2024. In December 2024, the crude steel production of 71 countries and regions included in the World Steel Association statistics was 144.5 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 5.6%.
By region, in December 2024, Africa’s crude steel output was 1.9 million tons, down 1.0% year-on-year; Asia and Oceania’s crude steel output was 106.3 million tons, up 9.0% year-on-year; the EU (27 countries) crude steel output was 9.6 million tons, up 7.2% year-on-year; other European countries’ crude steel output was 3.3 million tons, down 14.3% year-on-year; the Middle East’s crude steel output was 4.6 million tons, down 4.5% year-on-year; North America’s crude steel output was 8.8 million tons, down 4.3% year-on-year; Russia and other CIS countries + Ukraine’s crude steel output was 6.8 million tons, down 6.8% year-on-year; South America’s crude steel output was 3.1 million tons, down 3.8% year-on-year.
From the perspective of the world’s top 10 steel-producing countries (regions), in December 2024, China’s crude steel output was 75.97 million tons, an increase of 11.8% year-on-year; India’s crude steel output was 13.6 million tons, an increase of 9.5% year-on-year; Japan’s crude steel output was 6.9 million tons, a decrease of 1.1% year-on-year; the United States’ crude steel output was 6.7 million tons, a decrease of 2.4% year-on-year; Russia’s estimated crude steel output was 5.7 million tons, a decrease of 8.6% year-on-year; South Korea’s crude steel output was 5.2 million tons, a decrease of 3.2% year-on-year; Turkey’s crude steel output was 3 million tons, a decrease of 7.6% year-on-year; Germany’s crude steel output was 2.7 million tons, an increase of 4.1% year-on-year; Brazil’s crude steel output was 2.6 million tons, an increase of 1.8% year-on-year; Iran’s crude steel output was 2.6 million tons, a decrease of 8.2% year-on-year.
In December 2024, from the perspective of blast furnace pig iron production, the pig iron production of 37 countries (regions) in the world was 1016.34 million tons, an increase of 6.2% year-on-year. Among them, by region, the EU (27 countries) produced 5.4 million tons of pig iron, an increase of 6.1% year-on-year; the pig iron production of other European countries was 900,000 tons, a decrease of 31.2% year-on-year; the pig iron production of Russia and other CIS countries + Ukraine was 5.12 million tons, a decrease of 1.8% year-on-year; North America’s pig iron production is expected to be 2.38 million tons, a decrease of 3.0% year-on-year; South America’s pig iron production is 2.38 million tons, a decrease of 0.1% year-on-year; Asia’s pig iron production is 84.73 million tons (of which mainland China is 66.7 million tons), an increase of 8.1% year-on-year; Oceania’s pig iron production is 280,000 tons, a decrease of 10.1% year-on-year. In 2024, the world’s cumulative production of pig iron is 1.266 billion tons, a decrease of 1.8% year-on-year.
In December 2024, the production of direct reduced iron (DRI) in 13 countries around the world was 8.89 million tons, a decrease of 16.1% year-on-year. Among them, India’s direct reduced iron production was 4.86 million tons, an increase of 6.8% year-on-year, and Iran’s direct reduced iron production was 520,000 tons, a decrease of 80.3% year-on-year. In 2024, the direct reduced iron production of 13 countries in the world will be 125 million tons, an increase of 3.7% year-on-year.
